History

This is the “standard” lens introduced with the 500c. Unlike the other lenses introduced with this new camera which were largely adaptions of 1000F lenses, this was an enitirely new design: a planar rather than the Tessar of the 1000F. The First version of the lens (to 1961 up to serial number 2825569) was a six element design. There was also no depth of field preview lever. This first version of the lens generally are in serial number blocks 159XXXX, 257XXXX, 266XXXX and 282XXXX. The front element of this lens is noticeably more curved than the later version.

The second version was an improved design with 7 lens elements. This version was available from about 1960 to 1973 all with silver barrels.

The third modification was then T* multicoating was introduced (about 1971 and 1972 at Zeiss although they started being supplied with cameras in 1972-73). There are a number of Silver 80mm lenses with T* coating manufactured in this period (particularly in the 525XXXX and 551XXXX lens blocks) but some also from later production blocks.
